Good news for fans of the weird and macabre! Mirrah Foulkes’ feature film directorial debut, Judy and Punch, has started filming in Melbourne.
Produced by VICE Studios and Seaside Productions, the live-action take on the venerable Punch and Judy puppet play stars Damon Herriman (Justified, Secret City, Mr Inbetween) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Stoker, Only Lovers Left Alive) in the title roles.
Described as “brutal, original and violent”, Foulkes’ film follows puppeteers Judy and her husband Punch, in the peculiar and unforgiving town of Seaside as they endeavour to use their show to escape their hardscabble life. As the charismatic but sinister Punch’s actions result in brutal consequences, Judy teams up with a band of outcast heretics to enact revenge on him and the entire town of Seaside.
Michele Bennett (Mr Inbetween, Chopper), Nash Edgerton (Mr Inbetween, The Square) and VICE’s Danny Gabai (Lords of Chaos, The Bad Batch) are producing, while Madman Entertainment will be distributing in Australia and New Zealand.
Details are scant, but if it cleaves closely to the source material there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing a baby going through a sausage machine, and possibly somebody getting devoured by a crocodile, which means this is officially one to keep an eye on. No official release date has been set, but early 2019 seems like a safe bet.
